Treatment for Anxiety

What is anxiety?
Occasional anxiety as a response to external stressors such as a new job, a deadline, or relationship problems is a normal part of life. However, if the anxiety does not go away, persists for a long time, or begins to interfere with school, work, relationships, or everyday life, it becomes an anxiety disorder. Numerous anxiety disorders exist, and vary in how that may manifest or affect your life. If you believe you believe that you may have an anxiety disorder, it may be the right time to begin looking into a treatment for anxiety.
What are the different anxiety disorders?
The three most common anxiety disorders are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder. The symptoms of them vary, however they should all be treated in order to live a happier, healthier life.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms:
- Restlessness – feeling on edge
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
- Muscle tension
- Excessive worry
- Difficulty Sleeping
Panic Disorder Symptoms:
- Intense worries about panic attacks
- Fear or avoidance of places where panic attacks have occurred
- Sudden and repeated attacks of intense fear or stress
- Feelings of being out of control during a panic attack
Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms:
- Avoiding places where large amounts of people gather
- Feeling self-conscious in front of others, fear of humiliation, embarrassment, or rejection
- Blushing, sweating, or trembling in front of others
- Excessive worry about social situations
- Difficulty speaking and interacting to others
These are just some of the symptoms that manifest in each disorder, it is important to work out a specialized treatment for anxiety with a licensed therapist who is able to identify whether or not you have an anxiety disorder.
How is anxiety treated?
Treatment for anxiety is generally found in psychotherapy, medication, or both. At Treehouse Family Counseling, our therapists will work one-on-one with you to identify the anxiety that you have, and how it affects you. By tailoring treatment for anxiety to your specific needs, the therapy will be much more effective. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a very successful form of therapy in which we teach patients to think differently during situations, and about their anxieties. Teaching healthy coping mechanisms and exercises to reduce stress are also effective treatments for anxiety.
